Frequently Asked Questions
The Answers
I'm not creative. Even if I were, I don't have the time. How can I make my own book?
We've done all the work for you. Just point, click, and fill in the blanks. Each page has a unique illustration above each selected topic. We will prompt you to enter information about your baby's big day. When you are done, simply download, print, and insert it in your handmade album. We'll even remind you that it is time to make an entry.
What is included in the purchase of my book?
All books come with 30 archival quality album pages pre-printed with a colored border, an 18 month membership to Big Day Books page creation area and email reminders to help you fill out your book.
What is a post-bound album?
A post-bound album is held together with three screws. Simply lift the interior flap, unscrew, and lift the cover off. You can then insert or remove any pages you would like. Our books come with 30 pages, but if you want to add more you can easily buy post extenders and add as many pages as you like.
Is this similar to scrapbooking?
We like to think of ourselves as the anti-scrapbook. A Big Day book is for mothers that are short on time and energy, but don't want their baby books to reflect that. We'll help you get it done simply and beautifully. Countless mothers purchase traditional baby books and usually only fill in the first few entries, believing they will find the time later or won't ever forget those precious moments. Those books are still empty. A Big Day book will solve that problem by helping you remember to record your babies events in a way that takes just moments.
I've created a page, but want to wait to print it. What can I do?
After you create your page, simply click the save button. The page will then be saved in your book history. You can view all pages you have created, make changes, and print when you are ready.
What kind of pages can I create?
We have six different areas that give you the choice of creating over 30 different pages. Topics include: - How mom and dad met - My family tree - The big day - How we found out - Baby's firsts (16 different pages you can create to remember the first time including first smile, bath, solid food, tooth, slept through night, airplane trip, snow, etc.) - Holidays - The month in Review (let's you recap firsts, holidays, baby's likes and dislikes as well as eating and sleeping habits each month) - Adoption
Will a PDF work on my computer?
If you have acrobat reader you should be able to view and download your page for printing. For a free download of Acrobat reader,
please click here.
Can I print on both sides of the paper?
Yes. There is an option at the bottom of the page you are creating to print on either the front or back of the page.
How do I add photos?
There are two ways to add photos to your book. - First, you can attach photos with glue (archival quality) or photo corners to any of the supplied pages just as you would in a regular album. You can also print your digital photos directly on the supplied pages.
I want to print my digital photos directly to my paper. Do you have tips on setting this up?
To create a photo page in Word, use a 2.625 inch margin on the side with the pre-cut holes. A one inch margin should be used on the remaining three sides. You can center a single photo or add a few. It's up to you!
Can I upload my photos and put them in the page layout?
At this time we are unable to process photos to be placed in layouts online, but you can either glue photos into pages as you would in a regular album, or print them directly from your digital files. (See "How do I add photos?" above)
Do I need to change my printer settings to print my page out?
No. The pages in your book are letter size (8.5" x 11"). Just flatten the paper and print as you would any other sheet of paper. We would suggest printing a sample of your page on regular paper first just to be sure you are inserting the page the correct direction. Sometimes when you are printing both sides of the sheet it can be confusing!
Will I be able to use a Macintosh computer?
Yes. Our page creation system works on both Mac and PC platforms.
What if I can't get the page to print or download?
Please contact our technical staff immediately. We'll do our best to find out what the problem is as quickly as possible.
What if I don't have a printer?
You can easily save your files to a disk and bring them along with the paper that comes with your book to your local Kinko's or Alphagraphics and have them help you.
I don't see a holiday I celebrate in the list. Can you add it for me?
We are happy to add any holidays or firsts that we may have left out. Please contact us and we will add it as soon as possible.
Can I use regular 8.5" x 11" paper in my book?
Our paper is archival quality and scored in a way so it not only opens easily, but also will last a long time. We would not recommend using any other paper.
How long does my online membership last?
We know things take a bit longer to complete with the addition of a baby so membership for the baby's first year lasts 18 months.
I have a toddler and would like to enter information on them. Do you have pages I can create for older children?
We hope to grow right along side your family. In the future we hope to add pages for toddlers.
I updated a page, but my PDF does not seem to be changing?
Make sure that you're using the most recent versions of your web browser and PDF viewer applications.
For Windows users, we recommend
Firefox or Internet Explorer (version 6.0 or higher) and
Adobe Acrobat Reader.
For Macs, we recommend Safari or
Firefox and
Adobe Acrobat Reader or Preview.
If your software is up-to-date and you're still not seeing changes in your PDF, it may be due to your web browser's cache. Try clearing the cache by following the "To completely clear the cache" instructions for the browser that you're using on this Wikipedia page about browser caches.
If clearing your cache doesn't help, make sure that you're looking at the correct PDF file. Especially if you've already created a PDF and are making changes to it, your browser may be saving each PDF that you create with a different filename.
For example, if you are working on your "Welcome" page, the first PDF you create will be called BigDayBooks_Welcome.pdf. Subsequent PDFs that you created after making changes should have the same file name,
but your browser may have named them something like BigDayBooks_Welcome-1.pdf to avoid overwriting existing files.
There isn't enough room to type in everything I would like to say in the area I have selected. What can I do?
Due to the nature of the PDF page creation, we can only allow so much copy per line so the type fits on the page. Be brief on the page and, if it is a memory or story you would like to expand on, we encourage you to either hand write the note on a page and include it or create your own page that matches our page creation output by using Times 10 point type as your typeface.
